Belle Vernon Area School Board adopts budget with no tax raise

By Jenny Susa 2 min read

BELLE VERNON – The Belle Vernon Area School Board adopted a balanced budget on Monday for the upcoming school year. Superintendent Robert Nagy said the $28,110,229 budget would require no tax increase for any of the district’s residents, and some boroughs would even see a small decrease in taxes this year.

He said North Belle Vernon would see a .44-mill decrease, Belle Vernon a .04-mill decrease, Fayette City a .14-mill decrease, and Washington Township a .01-mill decrease.

One mill generates $1 for each $1,000 of assessed property value.

Business Manger Eileen Navish also reported to the board that the district is “ending the school year financially as healthy as it started.”

Director James McKevitt pointed out that this was “the second consecutive year that there was no tax increase,” and commended the administration for “doing such a fine job” preparing the budget.

In other matters, Director Charles Kraft reported that the board had received a letter for Sgt. Jeffrey Baker, a soldier in the U.S. Army, thanking all those in the district who were responsible for sending care packages for him and his friends in Iraq.

“I would like to commend Mrs. (Annette) Clay for working with the students to make those care packages,” said Director Dale Patterson.

Director Deborah Puglia also commented that it was nice to see positive things happening in the district.

The board also received communication from the Pennsylvania Department of Education that the school district was approved for an Accountability Block Grant in the amount of $361,000 for the 2005-06 school year.

In other matters, Nagy said that the school lunch prices will increase next year.

There will be a 5-cent increase at the elementary schools, making the price $1.55, and there will be a 10-cent increase at the middle and high schools, making the price $1.85.

Nagy reported that there has not been an increase in those prices since 2000, and since that time the Federal School Lunch program has made several changes in nutrition requirements and instituted a Wellness Policy, which will be implemented soon.

There will be no changes in breakfast prices, according to Nagy.
