Merritstown to celebrate Independence Day

2 min read

The Merrittstown Villagers will celebrate Independence Day with their 39th annual parade and fireworks display Monday. The opening ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. at the C.E. Hess Mini-Park, and the parade follows at 11 a.m. The parade will feature the Brownsville Area Senior High School band, various military groups, local politicians, antique and classic cars, and a multitude of fire companies.

Herman Jackson will be the master of ceremonies. The opening ceremony will feature Michelle Konter singing the National Anthem.

This year, the Villagers will honor Caroline Bookshar, a lifelong resident of Merrittstown, as parade marshal. Boy Scout Troop No. 664 and the Marine Corps League LH Detachment will offer the flag-raising ceremony and salute. The featured speakers will be state Sen. Richard A. Kasunic and state Rep. Peter J. Daley.

Tower Hill 2 Volunteer Fire Department will sell pork sandwiches and refreshments near the mini-park and at their fire hall throughout the day. The Republic Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will sell refreshments and root beer floats at the mini-park and at Dunlap’s Creek Presbyterian Church.

Fireworks conclude the day’s events and begin at dusk.

Any group or person interested in participating in the parade can call Chuck Lucostic at 724-246-2086. Anyone planning on entering a car in the parade should contact Lucostic before the parade.
