Central Greene School Board wants more time to decide on tickets

By Steve Ostrosky 3 min read

WAYNESBURG – Members of the Central Greene School Board want more time before deciding to offer season passes for the school district’s fall and winter sporting events, after reviewing the issue Tuesday. Directors received information from district athletic director Robert Stephenson and reviewed the impact on revenue if passes were offered. Superintendent Dr. Jerome Bartley said the money from ticket sales at athletic events pays for the cost of officials, and the district usually breaks even.

Last year, the district borrowed $2,880 from the general fund to cover the lack of revenue from ticket sales, he said. Business manager Walter Stout said admission fees are being charged at all fall and winter sports.

Bartley said the district would lose approximately $2,166 in revenue by implementing a season pass policy, and would lose $968 by having parents and siblings of student athletes get one free admission to an event.

“My only concern is the loss of revenue, which will have to be absorbed in another area,” he said.

Bartley said Stephenson contacted several school districts in the area, and most do not offer season passes because of the revenue loss. He said one local district offers the one free admission for parents and siblings of student athletes.

Director Ron Jesso said there is no hurry to act because the fall sports have completed and winter sports are beginning. He said if any action is taken, it should occur for the start of the 2006-07 school year.

In another issue, Bartley updated the board on plans to develop and implement a district-wide school wellness policy, as required by federal law.

The Pennsylvania School Boards Association has provided the district with a model policy and a school wellness committee will be formed to help shape the policy specific to Central Greene, he said.

Districts that receive federal funds for its food service program are required to adopt a wellness policy by June 30, 2006.

More information about the district’s effort will be given to the board next month, he said.

The board also transferred Rose Minardo to a part-time after-school security position at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School, transferred Jamie Munn to a 4.25-hour cook position at Waynesburg Central Elementary School, and named Dave Coldren as volunteer assistant junior high basketball coach.

Directors also accepted the resignation of Tom Camps, assistant junior high wrestling coach, and appointed Jeff Coss to the position.

The board will hold its annual reorganization meeting Monday, Dec. 5 and 6 p.m., followed by the committee meeting.

The board’s next business meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
