Maryland man dies in Interstate 70 crash
BUFFALO TWP. – An Emmitsburg, Md., man died in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday after he and a friend were struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer in a crash officials are claiming was caused by icy road conditions. Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco pronounced Darius Zurek, 27, dead at the scene at 11:01 p.m. Monday.
The cause of death has yet to be determined as officials are awaiting autopsy results.
According to the police and coroner reports, Zurek and a passenger, Stanley Dailey, 24, of Bexley, Ohio, were outside of their vehicle along the roadway after colliding earlier with another car on the icy highway.
A second vehicle operated by an unidentified woman slowed near Zurek’s vehicle and then was struck from behind by a third vehicle operated by Thomas Haller, 57, of Fort Orange, Fla., who also lost control on the icy road.
Haller’s tractor-trailer forced the second vehicle into Zurek and Dailey, throwing the men over an embankment.
Dailey suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.
The woman also sustained moderate injuries and was flown to Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital for treatment.
I-70 southbound was closed for three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
