Leonard Maharowski Sr.
Leonard Maharowski Sr., age 87, of Leisenring, Pa., and formerly of Johnstown, Pa., died on Sunday, October 2, 2005, in Hillside Manor Personal Care Home, Uniontown, Pa. He was born on May 9, 1918, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Joseph Maharowski and Frances (Witas) Maharowski.
A veteran of World War II, Leonard proudly served his country with the United States Army 482nd Engineers Maintenance Company at the rank of Technician 5th Grade in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns.
He retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation where he was a welder for thirty years.
Leonard was a very devoted husband and father and a proud grandfather and great grandfather!
He was an avid gardener and an accomplished woodworker and craftsman.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Adolph “Otto” Maharowski and Victor “Pete” Maharowski, and two sisters, Wanda Maharowski Sturm and Frances Maharowski.
Surviving are: his wife Dorothy Joyce (Garlick) Maharowski, formerly of Liverpool, England, whom he met and married in England during World War II and with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 13, 2005; their twin children: son, Leonard Maharowski Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Dunbar, Pa., and daughter, Rosina Maharowski McWhirter and her husband, Calvin McWhirter, of Alexandria, Virginia; six grandchildren: Justin Maharowski, Jared Maharowski and his wife Tara, Jeffrey Maharowski, United States Navy Fireman and Damage Controlman aboard the U.S.S. Gonzalez DD8-66 currently serving a second tour in the war zone, Jason McWhirter and his wife Sarah, Adam McWhirter and his wife Erin, and Troy McWhirter; two great grandchildren: Mason Maharowski and Alexandra Grace McWhirter; a sister, Della Maharowski Dreszenovitz of York, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
Private Funeral Ceremonies will be conducted in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
Arrangements are under direction of the STEPHEN R. HAKY FUNERAL HOME INC. AT SYLVAN HEIGHTS CEMETERY, A Dignity Memorial Provider, 603 North Gallatin Avenue Extension, Uniontown, Pa.
