Post offices closed Monday
U.S. Postal Service facilities throughout the Pittsburgh District, which includes most of western Pennsylvania and the panhandle of West Virginia, will be closed for retail transactions on Monday in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Collection schedules for the city offices, as well as for many of the larger surrounding post offices, will be normal all day. The Postal Service is gearing up to prepare for the processing and transportation of the mail on an “as-usual” basis all day, expecting the mail volume to be close to that of a normal Monday for both business and residential customers.
Columbus Day is not a widely observed holiday because a significant number of businesses remain open. Many of these business customers, as well as residential customers, hold their mail, thinking it will not be picked up until the day after the holiday. This is not the case, the Postal Service said.
Mail will be collected throughout the Pittsburgh 152 and the Wheeling, W.Va., 260 delivery areas and the larger surrounding post offices Monday. Customers are asked to deposit their mail before 5 p.m. This mail will be collected and processed on the holiday, expediting it to its destination. Mail processing facilities in Pittsburgh and Wheeling will be staffed to handle the anticipated mail volumes.
Although there will be no regular mail delivery on Monday, Express Mail will be delivered. Express Mail is delivered every day of the year, including Christmas.
