Joseph P. Matyus Sr.

Joseph Paul Matyus Sr., 85, of Masontown, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005. He was born July 19, 1920, in Byesville, Ohio, the son of the late Andrew and Anna Matyus.

He was a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Church. He was a lifelong resident of Masontown, and attended Masontown High School. He served in the United States Navy as a 2nd Class Gunners Mate during World War II. He was a life member of VFW Post 4584 of Masontown, a life member of the Pal’s Club of Masontown, and a life member of the American Legion Post 423 of Masontown.

Mr. Matyus was employed by U.S. Steel Corporation as a coal analysis until his retirement. He was also a talented blacksmith and coached Little Knights Baseball League for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Frances Matyus; two sisters, Velma Kurpiel and Ann Aspell; and two brothers, Stephen Matyus and Andrew Matyus.

Surviving are his children: Joseph Jr., and his wife, JoAnn of Masontown, John and wife, Marlene of Carmichaels, Mary Ann Ballant and husband, David of Masontown, and Irene Lutrario and husband, Angelo of Uniontown. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Joseph and wife, Marni Matyus, Jason and wife, Crystal Matyus, Christina Frankenfield and husband, Keith, Andrea Fedor and husband, David, Stephen and Victoria Ballant and Valerie and Leslie Matyus; Angela, Daniel and Michael Lutrario; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Matyus of Flushing, N.Y.; four sisters, Mary Sich of Whitestone, N.Y., Gayle Ostuni of Whitestone, N.Y., Margaret Margovich of New Jersey, and Frances Ellard of Estero, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOME INC., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 515 North Main St., Masontown, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p .m., and on Saturday until 9:30 a.m., in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held in All Saints R.C. Church of Masontown, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. James Bump as celebrant. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by VFW Post 4584.
