John A. McMullen
John A. “Jack” McMullen, 85, of Uniontown, Pa., died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at 4:15 p.m. in the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., of injuries suffered when he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident outside the VFW on Friday, October 7, 2005. Born in Lambert, Pa. on July 26, 1920, he is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carolyn Joan Ciarlo McMullen, his only son, John of Oakland, California and his niece and goddaughter Deborah of Dawson, Pa.
His parents, Harry and Beatrice McMullen and his siblings, Harry, Jimmy and Margaret, preceded him in death.
He graduated from German Township High School in 1938 and was a decorated WWII Coast Guard veteran.
For 50 years, he was a disk jockey, a newsman and the play-by-play announcer for the championship Uniontown Red Raider. He was voted the most popular radio personality in Fayette County and was a well-loved raconteur and master of ceremonies.
As Fayette County Redevelopment Authority Executive Director, he was responsible for the building up of Bailey Park, the Bypass, the East End, and much low and middle-income housing. Later he was head of Uniontown Community Development.
Upon retirement, he worked at Teletech and was Exalted Ruler of the Uniontown Elks Lodge 370 (B.P.O.E.), and Commander of the General George C. Marshall VFW Post 51. He was elected All American National Commander for helping to increase the post’s membership ten-fold. Until recently, he was the ever popular the Friday Night Bingo Caller at the VFW.
A military memorial will be held at VFW POST 47, 142 West Main Street, Uniontown, Pa., on Saturday morning, October 22, 2005, at 10 a.m. and a Memorial Mass with speakers will be said at SAINT JOHN’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 50 Jefferson Street, Uniontown, Pa., on Monday, October 24, 2005 at 10 a.m.
Mr. McMullen gave his body to WVU Hospitals through the Human Gift Registry.
