Uniontown City Council awards contract
Uniontown City Council awarded a $26,676 contract Friday for demolition work that is part of a renovation project at the State Theatre Center for the Arts and the Union Trust Building. Jules and Cole Coal Co. of Waltersburg was awarded the contract based on its low bid, which was significantly lower than the next lowest bid.
The two other bids were $72,000 and $78,064.
After the bids were opened at a special meeting in the morning, the meeting was recessed so representatives from Fayette Engineering and Fay-Penn Economic Development Council, the project manager, could review the bids.
Council reconvened in the afternoon and unanimously agreed to award the contract to Jules and Cole.
Russell Mechling of Fayette Engineering and Bob Opel of Fay-Penn said Jules and Cole met all bidding requirements.
Opel said the contract calls for the removal of an interior wall that separates the first floors of the State Theatre and the attached Union Trust Building to open up the entire floor.
He said the floor elevations in the two buildings are different, and the overall renovation project involves making the floors level with each other, and expanding the stage and dressing room areas.
Councilman Bob Cerjanec said the city is using a $385,000 state grant to fund the renovations.
The project includes installing a fire sprinkler system, he said.
Private donations paid for renovation work already done in the theater.
