Irene Kapalko Balaban, 80, of Silver Springs, Md., passed away Oct. 11, 2005, at Renaissance Gardens in Silver Springs, Md. Irene was born on Sept. 24, 1925, in Sharon, Pa., to the late Joseph and Mary Kapalko.

She earned a B.A. degree in Chemistry in 1946, from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa., and a teaching degree from Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, Pa., in 1955.

She married Louis Balaban on Nov. 27, 1948, in Masontown, Pa. Irene taught at German Township High School, before moving to Maryland.

Irene was an employee of the Prince George’s County School System, teaching science at Rollingcrest Junior High from 1964 to 1977 and at Martin Luther King Junior High until her retirement in 1986, after teaching more than 30 years. She was also a member of Resurrection Parish of Silver Springs, and a member of the Maydale Women’s Society and the Porcelain China Painters of Maryland.

Irene is survived by her husband, Louis, three children; six grandchildren, and a sister and brother.

A Funeral Mass for Irene was celebrated on Saturday, October 15, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Silver Springs.
