Two candidates vie for Springfield supervisor

SPRINGFIELD TWP. – Two candidates will vie for one, six-year supervisory seat in the November general election. Bill Striner, a Democrat, and Rick Burkholder, a Republican, are running for the post that will be vacated by long-time supervisor Marshall Clark who opted to retire.

Both candidates are natives of Normalville while Striner previously served as supervisor from 1986-1991. Striner said he ran again in 1992, but lost.

Striner added that he enjoyed his former role as a township supervisor and intends to work for the people as well as with the current supervisors if elected.

Since he holds a CDL license, Striner said he is able to operate various equipment, including that used for paving.

As a former supervisor, Striner said he is familiar with the costs to operate the township and therefore would research any grant funding available for road maintenance and the Normalville and Mill Run Volunteer Fire Departments.

Striner resides with his wife, Shawn and children Heidi Striner, Laura Laws and Derrick Laws.

While he has lent a hand with several past campaigns, Burkholder said he would like to make a difference if he is elected also with hopes of helping to secure grant funding for the township to help in various areas.

“I hope to open a few new doors,” said Burkholder.

Burkholder, 38, said his employment in the construction business would also enable him to work part-time in the summer and full-time in the winter with his insurance carrying over throughout that time saving the township at least $10,000.

Burkholder resides in Mill Run with his wife, Michelle, and sons, Joe and Nicholas.
