Daniel “Moon” Stefl, 87, of Connellsville, Pa., died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Highlands Hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Grindstone, Pa., a son of the late Anton and Anna Pokorney Stefl.

Daniel served during World War II with the U.S. Army.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a coal miner and was later employed by Douglas Aircraft in California.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Connellsville, American Legion Post 301 and the United Mine Workers.

“Moon” loved sports and enjoyed working in his garden.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Joseph T. Cassidy Jr. and wife, Diane and Deborah Bieber and husband, Bill; a step-granddaughter, Shelly Jo Cassidy; a step great-grandson, Ryan Robson, all of Connellsville; three brothers, Andrew Stefl of Eustis, Fla., Robert Stefl of Pittsburgh, and Richard Stefl and wife, Sophie of McKeesport; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha “Betty” Cassidy Stefl in 2004; two sisters, Margaret Borchin and Ethel Breakwell; and two brothers, George and Stanley Stefl.

Friends will be received in the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME INC., 418 North Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m., and Monday from 9 until 10 a.m., the hour of the funeral service with his pastor, Philip S. Ramstad officiating. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park. Full military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by the V.F.W. Post 21 and American Legion Posts 301 and 762. There will be no visitation on Monday, Sept. 5, 2005.
