2 die in separate accidents
BULLSKIN TWP. – A rash of accidents, including two fatal accidents, had local officials busy throughout the day Tuesday. State police would not release the identity of a fatality in a two-car crash at the intersection of Route 119 and King View Road Tuesday, as investigators continued to review the details of the collision and attempted to contact the victim’s next of kin.
And in Monessen, an 83-year-old Belle Vernon woman died in a one-car crash after her vehicle struck a curb along Pennsylvania Avenue and then veered off the roadway and crashed into a two-story home.
Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said Florence Potega of Mulberry Street, Belle Vernon, was pronounced dead at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Monongahela Valley Hospital emergency room.
Warco said the cause and manner of death remain to be determined.
According to the coroner’s report, Potega was driving east along Pennsylvania Avenue at a high rate of speed when she struck the curb and traveled off the roadway. The vehicle then traveled another 45 feet before striking the house.
Warco said the Monessen Police Department is continuing to investigate the early morning crash.
In the Bullskin collision, trooper George Carlberg said the two-vehicle crash occurred when one vehicle drove through a red light at the intersection striking the second vehicle, which was pulling out from King View Road.
But Carlberg could not release the name of the victim, pending the crash investigation.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damages.
Police said all injured parties in the crash were transported to Frick Hospital.
Fayette County Deputy Coroner Marisa Riffle did not have any information on the crash victim Tuesday evening and the Westmoreland County Coroner’s office could not be reached.
According to Fayette County 911, in addition to the state police, volunteer fire departments from Bullskin and Everson, emergency personnel from Fayette EMS and crews from STAT Med Evac also responded to the 1:55 p.m. crash.
