Covered bridge event features historic structures

CARMICHAELS – For the 35th year, Carmichaels will host the Covered Bridge Festival. The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The historic Greene Academy adjacent to the Carmichaels Covered Bridge will be the site for the activities.

Through the courtesy of Community Bank, the popular horse and wagon rides, through the covered bridge and old town, will be available for young and old. Nancy Britner will set up a small petting zoo at the rear of the grounds.

Entertainment for Saturday will be Lost Creek musical group at 1 and 3 p.m. The group, from Morgantown, W.Va., features an award-winning young fiddler. The Greene Academy Dulcimer Players will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday will begin with an old-fashioned morning worship service for all faiths at 9 a.m. in the academy courtyard, with the Rev. Frank Vucic.

Sunday’s entertainment includes the music of Acoustical Shadows of the Blue and Gray at 1 and 3 p.m., and Just Us (Helen and Dave) will perform at 2 p.m.

Hot food will be catered upstairs by Morning Sun, with “Bernie’s cookout” in the courtyard. Also, there will be Academy ice cream; apples, cider, peaches and more from Little Green Apples; Jeff Dunmire Kettle Korn; Joyce’s 12 flavors Copper Kettle Fudge and more.

Boy Scout Troop 1262 will operate a funnel cake stand and also assist crafters in setting up Friday night. The scouts will also be available Saturday and Sunday mornings, and aid in tearing down Sunday evening.

Crafters include: Shields Herb & Flower Farm with dried flowers, wreaths, potpourri; Patricia Volek with appliqu?d shirts, denim; Donna Hlebik with homemade scented candles in Mason jars; Marty and Cindy Howsare with blanket buddies, animal pillows, original artwork and prints; Ronald Dean with wood and much more; Carolyn Hartley with jewelry; Justin Tatar/Always Glowing Candles, jars, votive and tarts; Brenda Shiflett with primitive, country and rustic; Carolyn Schuessler with quality silk florals; Karen Rishel with grapevine angels, stars, garlands, novelties for kids; Betcha/Hough/Yeardie with quality wood crafts, wreaths, standup figures; Melanie Miller “Miller’s cast of creations”-quilts, one of a kind dolls; Alicia Hagenbuch with decorative wood crafts; Kathy Kerr with hand sewn, crochet items, needlework, wood items, decorated shirts; Amy Earnest with baskets, chairs & stools/a few with tole painting; Julie Gillogly & Malinda John “Petal Perfect Designs” with snowman ornaments from light bulbs, rustic to elegant floral arrangements; Phillip Podroskey with wood crafts & beef jerky; Bridgett Drennon with wood crafts; Nancy Britner with painted pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn; Suzen Bell with scented items, melts, potpourri, candles, primitive raggedies; Judy Kaczmarczyk with ceramics and porcelain; Amber Messer with pottery; Greene Academy with T-shirts with print of covered bridge/academy, crocks, prints, note cards, Bicentennial Book, etc.
