Beth-Center clubs help Katrina victims

By Jenny Susa 2 min read

The Bethlehem Center High School Leo Club and National Honor Society kicked off a two-week fund-raiser to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina last Friday with a district-wide hat day. Nurse Belinda Brova and teacher Ray VanSickle organized the donation drive for the students, and both said the students were happy to help.

“We’ve done the hat day in the past to raise money for different things,” said VanSickle. “Last year we did one to help a student diagnosed with cancer. We usually do pretty well.”

Brova said this year was no exception, since the district raised $1,372 on hat day.

“The students want to help and they like to participate,” said Brova. “Any time they can do something that normally isn’t allowed, they’ll do it.”

VanSickle said the students who wanted to wear a hat to school donated $1 the day before, and Brova explained that they were given a sticker at that time to prove that they bought the privilege of wearing a hat.

The money raised on hat day was only the beginning for Bethlehem Center, since at the high school there are containers throughout the building where donations can be placed, and they will be collecting money until next Friday.

Brova said the Leo Club’s efforts won’t stop there.

“We have several projects going on the next few weeks,” said Brova.

After they have collected all the money they will be placing flood buckets at the high school, which are to be filled with bleach, other cleaning agents and household items.

Brova said that in addition to collecting those items for the people affected by the hurricane, the Leo Club also wants to help the animals that are in need of new homes.

“We’ve heard so much about displaced animals,” said Brova. “So the Leo Club will be making cookies shaped like dog bones that they will sell and they will donate the money to the humane society.”
