Connellsville administrators look for ways to improve scores

CONNELLSVILLE – District administrators will re-evaluate their math curriculum after falling short in required achievement levels in one area. Connellsville Area School District Superintendent James Duncan told board members Wednesday that administrators and teachers will be looking at ways to help students achieve the benchmarks set in the federal No Child Left Behind Act after learning 11th-grade students did not meet the math proficiency levels.

“It isn’t a problem at the high school level or with our math teachers,” he said. “It’s a problem with (the) mathematics (curriculum) and we are going to be working on that.”

According to the results released last week by the state Department of Education, with the exception of the 11th-grade math scores, all elementary and secondary buildings met or exceeded the math and reading proficiency targets for 2005.

Director of Federal Programs William Wilson said he was “very pleased” with the progress being made within the district.

“In 2001, when the (performance targets) were put in place, we had only three of the 11 buildings meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) levels,” he said. “We’ve whittled that number down to one.”

Because the district has made strides in its achievement levels, the state education department recognized it during a ceremony last week in Harrisburg, according to Duncan.

“There’s always room for improvement, but we are doing very well,” he said.
