Passenger killed in car wreck on I-79

State police at Waynesburg said a passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash in a construction zone on Interstate 79 north in Greene County was killed. The accident occurred at 3:30 a.m. Thursday in Whiteley Township.

Police did not release the names of the passenger or the driver, who was injured, as of Thursday night.

Police said the driver traveled into the right lane, which was closed because of construction, to pass a vehicle and then drove on the median to pass another vehicle, police said.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle it struck a guardrail. The vehicle flipped over twice, ejecting the driver and passenger.

The driver was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., for medical treatment and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
