Group will represent county in Harrisburg parade
One local organization will have the honor of representing Fayette County in the parade to kick off the Centennial Celebration of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg this fall. The Pennsylvania Treasures Parade, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, through center city Harrisburg, will feature participants from all 67 counties across the state. The Fayette County commissioners have been asked to nominate one organization in each of three categories, including an artistic division, an historic division and a marching band division.
Interested participants must notify the commissioners within two months if they are hoping to march in the historic parade.
Commission Chairwoman Angela M. Zimmerlink is asking that all prospective organizations make contact of their intention to seek a nomination by June 12.
The commissioners must submit their selections to the Pennsylvania Capitol Centennial Commission by July 14. Zimmerlink said after the commissioners make their choice for the three nominations, the Capitol Centennial Commission will make the final determination of which nomination will represent Fayette County. Zimmerlink said the Capitol Centennial Commission will make every effort to prevent duplication of entries in one particular division by choosing one from the three nominations received.
Zimmerlink said letters have been sent to schools and historical societies in the county, and the commissioners are hopeful that any other interested associations or organizations will respond as well.
“The Fayette County commissioners encourage your participation and look forward to hearing from many organizations interested in representing Fayette County in this centennial celebration in Harrisburg,” Zimmerlink said.
Local art associations, historical societies, ethnic organizations or clubs, junior or high school bands or other organized bands interested in representing the county by either a float, re-enactors or other visual elements or participating as a marching band should contact Zimmerlink at either 724-430-1200, extension 225, by mail at 61 E.
