Carmichaels will advertise for bids for building

CARMICHAELS – Construction specifications for a new municipal building are almost finished and the borough will advertise for construction bids within the next few weeks, officials said Tuesday. Borough Council President Chris Bates said the specifications will be completed soon and the project will be advertised in two or three weeks.

Construction will begin in June or July and will take approximately three or four months to finish, Bates said.

The new one-story borough building will be built on a vacant lot the borough owns in the town square, he said.

Measuring 30 feet by 40 feet, the “very utilitarian” building will house the police department, borough office and a meeting room.

“We’re going do this whole project without raising taxes one penny,” Bates said.

The borough has been renting its present building on South Market Street for about 20 years.

The current rent is $300 a month for the cramped building, which used to be a gas station, officials said.

Bates said the new building will save rent money and cost less to heat that the current building.

He said the borough has $98,000 to pay for the new building.

About $15,000 is from borough coffers and the rest is grant money, he said.
