Group carries cross across fayette county
A group of Fayette County residents will begin a journey this morning as they carry a cross across Fayette County, recalling the Passion of Christ. They will begin the journey at 7 a.m. at the Lane-Bane Bridge in Brownsville at the Fayette County border with Washington County and travel east to the Youghiogheny Lake Bridge at the border with Somerset County.
They hope to finish this mission by 4 p.m. Saturday, ending with a prayer service that includes appeals for all the churches in Fayette County.
“We’re looking for a way to send a message – a signal across the county,’ said the Rev. Ken Walls, pastor of Farmington Free Methodist Church.
“For a nanosecond, it forces them to look at the cross and consider what Easter is about,’ he said.
Walls and his wife, Thelma, are making their fourth journey with the cross. They first took on the mission in 1998, then in 2000 and 2003.
For this trip, the couple will be joined by several pastors, including the Rev. Charles O’Brien of Hopwood Free Methodist Church, the Rev. Dean Griffiths of New Life Free Methodist Church in Smock, the Rev. Buzz Hall of Solid Rock Ministry-Faith-Hope-Love in Uniontown and the Rev. Paul Echenrode of Bridgeport Free Methodist Church.
The group plans to be in Uniontown around lunchtime and at the top of Mount Summit by 4 p.m. today. They will finish the rest of the journey Saturday.
