California mayor favors renewing publication of anti-drug pamphlets

By Amanda Clegg 2 min read

CALIFORNIA – In what he called a coincidence in light of a recent drug raid in the borough, Mayor Casey Durdines asked council to renew the borough’s agreement with a publisher of anti-drug pamphlets, during their regular meeting Thursday evening. Council voted to allow Jim Hay of L.A.W. (Let’s All Work) to Fight Drug Abuse publications to solicit borough businesses to advertise in the free publication that tackles such issues as drugs, date rape and stranger danger.

All publishing money is raised through community business sponsors and the last publications available in the borough were from 1997, Hay said.

“The drug problem is growing,” he said. “Methamphetamine is a major topic of this publication. It’s a little graphic, but we get to the nitty gritty.”

L.A.W. produces new publications every two years and distributes the publication throughout 27,000 communities within the United States, Hay said.

“It’s my opinion we take part in this,” Durdines said. “It’s a valuable educational tool.”

Council also conducted the following business:

– Agreed to meet with a DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) representative on Monday, April 28, at 11:30 a.m. about matching funding in relation to the wellness center.

– Voted to apply for county aid to help with maintenance of Peach Street and Powerhouse Road.

– Agreed to transfer 2 mills of tax money to the Recreation Authority, pending acceptable budget, summary of proposed projects and proper bonding.

– Passed on the issue of occupancy inspections and fees until further investigation.

– Reminded property owners to put out their canned garbage 24 hours before pick up.

– Announced Mon Valley Reads Week to run Monday, April 24, to Friday, April 28, and American Legion Poppy Days to run Wednesday, May 3, through Friday, May 5.

– Announced a fishing tournament happening Saturday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rotary Park.

– Voted to receive NIMS (National Incident Management System) certification.

– Announced work on emergency operation plan for the borough.

– Accepted Ordinance No. 500: codification of all old borough ordinances.
