People whose dog has an expired license will be cited and could be ordered to pay up to $300 in fines.

State law requires that all dogs 3 months or older be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year. The license should be displayed on the dog’s collar. Licenses for spayed or neutered dogs cost $6.50 each; other licenses are $8.50 each. The rates are reduced to $4.50 and $6.50 for senior citizens or those with disabilities.

Rabies vaccinations are required for all dogs and any house cat that is over 3 months old. The maximum fine per violation of the rabies law is $300 per day.

All dogs must be under control and are not permitted to run free.

Anyone wishing to lodge a complaint should call Gary Moore, state dog warden, at 724-246-1448 or online at www.agriculture.state.pa.us.

Blood drive set

A blood drive for two Masontown boys will be held on Monday at All Saints Social Hall in the borough.

The drive, held by Central Blood Bank, is to help replenish blood supplies for Josh Liston, 13, and Jacob Elias, 4.

Lisa Cassidy, a spokeswoman for the blood bank, said that this was the first drive held for Elias, but noted that one was held for Liston in October 2005.

Liston was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in February 2004. The rare disorder results from the unexplained failure of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. Liston’s treatment included receiving blood transfusions for more than a year.

In March 2005, Elias was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (ALL), a pediatric cancer.

It is an overproduction of immature lymphocytes, called lymphoblasts that congest the bone marrow and prevent it from making blood cells properly.

Elias has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment that has required him to use numerous blood products. He will have to continue that treatment for two more years.

Donors must be at least 17, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in generally good health.

Friends and family are sponsoring the drive. Anyone interested in donating can call Correna Swiantek at 412-209-7573 or Central Blood Bank at 1-866-DONORS-1, or by visiting www.centrabloodbank.org.
