John Chernay
John Chernay, age 93, of Daisytown, Pa., died Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Humbert Lane Personal Care Home, Washington, Pa., following a short illness. He was born October 3, 1912, in Hungary, the son of Andrew Chernay and Anna Csompoly Chernay.
He was an Original Member of Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Daisytown until its closure in 1994 and since that time a member of Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Daisytown.
Mr. Chernay retired in 1976 from J & L Steel Corporation’s Vesta No. 4 Mine and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local No. 6330.
He enjoyed golfing in his free time.
On October 9, 1943, he married Verona Danyi Chernay of Daisytown, Pa., who survives.
Also surviving, in addition to his wife, are four daughters: Rose Chernay of Canonsburg, Pa., Barbara Kerch of Holbrook, Pa., Ruth Hockley of Carlisle, Pa., and Deanna Martik of Coal Center, Pa.; three sons: John A. Chernay of Langhorne, Pa., Dennis Chernay of Belle Vernon, Pa., and Gary Chernay of Coal Center, Pa.; twenty-two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Frank Chernay of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ed Chernay of Arizona; and six sisters: Emma Bennie, Roberta Norris and Eleanor Antonelli all of Cleveland, Ohio, Rose McCann, Peggy Weseman and Marianne Eaton all of Arizona. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Andrew Chernay, Steve Chernay, Joe Chernay and also Ernie Chernay (April 15, 2006), and three sisters, Julia Gubics, Ann Cervelli and Betty Lanyi.
Friends will be received in the JOHN B. GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main Street (Route 40), Beallsville, Pa., on Monday from 3 to 8 p.m.
Friends are asked to gather at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 10 a.m. to proceed to Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Richeyville, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Father John Forbidussi as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery, Beallsville, Pa.
