LH to host information session for parents

The Laurel Highlands School District has announced an informational session for parents and current ninth-grade students to learn more about the academies and clusters the school will offer in the coming year. The session will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Each student of the Class of 2009 will choose one out of eight academies/clusters or enrollment in a program at the Fayette County Vocational-Technical School. Students will follow their chosen course of study throughout their 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade years.

“We’re excited about it. It’s something we’ve been working on for two years,” said Dr. Gary Brain, director of curriculum for the Laurel Highlands School District.

Brain added that the academies/clusters will permit students to make better educational and career decisions in the future.

The orientation will present an overview of the academies/clusters followed by a time to talk and ask questions with teachers involved in each cluster/academy.

Academies/clusters the school will offer are finance, hospitality and tourism, information technology, fine arts, pre-engineering, education, health and human services, advanced placement or the Fayette County Vocational-Technical School, which offers choices ranging from child care and food service to auto body and welding.

Representatives from each academy/cluster will be present to answer questions. Brain said students are encouraged to choose a career track, but not required and it is possible for them to switch options at a later date.

Brain said the program could help students find what they want to do for a career as well as eliminate what they don’t.

Brain asked that parents please plan to attend the orientation. Teachers and counselors can tell students more about educational requirements and career opportunities in the field they choose, he said.
