GEORGES TWP. – Superintendent Walter Vicinelly congratulated five of the district’s elementary schools on their performance in the Allegheny Conference on Community Development report card during the board’s regular meeting Wednesday evening. D. Ferd Swaney, Masontown Central, George J. Plava, Smithfield and A.L. Wilson elementary schools received special recognition for their proficiency in fifth-grade reading or math. The report covers 10 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.

“It’s quite an honor,” Vicinelly said. “It’s nice to be recognized for our effort.”

In other matters, board members voted to authorize payment of the A.L. Wilson Capital Project. The board agreed to make a $1,000 pre-construction phase progress payment to Fairchance Construction and pay Michael Molnar Associates $25,000 to begin design plans for the new elementary school. The school will be built on approximately 27 acres of land in Fairchance with a building construction cost not to exceed $7,481,950.

The board also conducted the following business:

– Agreed to purchase two circuit boards for Caller ID for D. Ferd Swaney and George J. Plava elementary schools at a cost of $500.

– Voted to send two administrators to attend the Bomb and Bomb Threat Management in Schools conference in New Cumberland on May 18 and 19 at a cost not to exceed $950.
