News and Notes: Time to put out hummingbird feeders

By Rod Schoener 2 min read

Monday is the first of May, which is an unofficial target date for the early annual arrival of the ruby-throated hummingbirds. While most don’t show up this early, it seems that are always a few early arrivals.

Hummingbirds feed on nectar with their long brush-like tongues. They also eat insects and spiders.

Nectar is their favorite food and the one that attracts them to backyard feeders and flower gardens.

Since few flowers are in bloom, humans must provide food for the early arrivals.

Commercial nectar mixes work fine, but the standard homemade nectar of one part white table sugar to four parts of water works best. Boil the water and add the sugar. Allow the mixture to cool and place in your feeders.

Leftover nectar can be stored in the refrigerator.

CROSSBOWS FOR TURKEYS: It was announced late last week that crossbows have been approved for spring gobbler hunting.

SPORTSMEN’S LEAGUE MEETING: The regular monthly meeting of the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s League Fayette County Chapter will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mountain Lodge.

FISH COMMISSION APPOINTEE: State Senator Richard A. Kasunic lauded the Senate’s unanimous confirmation of Len Lichvar of Boswell in Somerset County as a member of the Fish and Boat Commission’s Board of Commissioners.

“Len’s impressive experience and commitment to hunting, fishing and conservation makes him uniquely qualified for this important post,” Kasunic said. “I’, proud to have fought for his nomination and look forward to working with him on issues that are important to anglers and boaters.”

Lichvar previously served as executive director of the Southern Alleghenies Conservancy. He currently serves with the Somerset County Conservation District.

Lichvar was initially recommended for confirmation in 2003. Kasunic requested that Gov. Ed Rendell re-nominate Lichvar to the position in December.
