Church to present ‘Secret Keeper Girl Tour’
Just in time to get ready to go back to school, Abundant Life Church in Uniontown will present “Secret Keeper Girl Tour’ from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The presentation is based on the book of the same name by author Dannah Gresh of State College, Pa., and is part of a national tour. The book is aimed to show mothers and their young daughters how to enjoy today’s latest fashions yet dress with modesty.
“What I like is that she doesn’t tell you that you can’t wear these fashions but that this is in the store. This is what’s available,’ said Jocelyn Wells, wife of the Rev. Mike Wells, who is youth pastor for Abundant Life. “The girls don’t feel they have to stick out. Puberty is a hard enough time without feeling that you don’t fit in.’
The presentation is geared to daughters ages 8 to 15 and their mothers.
“There are two parts. There’s a fashion show where mothers show off fashions from the ’50 to the ’80s and they present what the Bible has to say about fashion and modesty,’ said Jocelyn Wells, who is organizing this event. “Then they have a group of girls model fashions for back to school.’
The idea is to show girls how to wear the latest fashions but to do so with modesty. Instead of criticism, this presentation offers helpful advice.
Jocelyn Wells said, “Everybody has a comment on how people dress and what they see but they don’t have conversations on how to change this.’
Wells said, “We want to open up conversations between daughters and mothers.’
The couple speaks with experience. They have three children, including 7-year-old daughter Michaela, who is already a fan of the “Secret Keeper’ book.
The book as well as others by Gresh and T-shirts that go along with the tour will be available for sale at the Abundant Life presentation.
The presentation is free but Abundant Life is asking people to call to pre-register. Each of the girls will leave with a hand-woven bracelet.
Jocelyn Wells, who visited a presentation in Greensburg with her daughter, said of Gresh’s program, “I really like her approach. It’s up to date. .. It shows how to combine biblical with how girls are dressing. We do need to stay fashionable. We don’t need to stay far apart but there needs to be a difference.’
