Cumberland Twp. supervisors approve compensation policy

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

Cumberland Township supervisors took action Monday that allows them to receive their normal pay while attending court proceedings or local governmental meetings that involve township business during regular work hours. Supervisors unanimously voted to conform to a law enacted in July that authorizes supervisors to receive their normal pay, which is either their regular township employee wages if they are employees or compensation for lost wages if they are not township employees, while appearing in court or attending a local government meeting on township business during normal work hours.

The supervisor can receive such compensation for no more than 120 hours per year, according to the law.

Previously, supervisors had to take time off from work and could not be paid to appear in court or attend a meeting concerning township matters during regular work hours.

In regards to a bill awaiting action by the General Assembly, the supervisors passed a resolution opposing legislation that would reduce the amount of money the township receives from its franchise agreement with Atlantic Broadband.

The township currently receives between $18,000 and $19,000 a year from the agreement.

In unrelated business, the supervisors authorized Marcia E. Sonneborn, community development program administrator, to ask the Department of Community and Economic Development to release $212,118 in Community Development Block Grant money for the Nemacolin street resurfacing project.

Sonneborn said $125,146 of the money would come from the 2005 CDGB allocation and $86,972 from this year’s allotment.

She said she would advertise for bids after the money has been released so work can start in the fall.

In other business, the supervisors:

Approved charging a $500 fee to tap into a new 1,100-foot sewage line in Serbiantown.

Agreed to buy the piping for the Serbiantown project for $5,284 bid from Christopher Backhoe and Plumbing, which submitted the lowest of three bids.

Continued the meeting to 3 p.m. Aug. 23, when the supervisors will open bids for seal coating streets.
