Wharton Twp. supervisors approve rezoning request

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

WHARTON TWP. – Township supervisors unanimously agreed Monday to rezone a 4-acre lot on Route 40 at the request of a Maryland couple who want to build a 21-room inn on the property. William and Janice Costello of Annapolis asked the supervisors to change the zoning from agricultural (A-1) to commercial business (B-1) of 4.36 acres at the corner of Route 40 and Marker Road where the now-closed Green Acres Motel is located.

They have a tentative sales agreement with property owner James E. Pash of Farmington, but obtaining a state permit for an on-site sewage system could takes months, William Costello said.

Costello said his wife is from the area and they want to relocate to the township.

“We found this really neat property at the corner of Marker Road and Route 40,” Costello said. “We want to build a 20-room inn.”

A motel used to operate on the property and the adjoining properties are zoned B-1, he said.

He said he plans to demolish the former motel and remove an old trailer from the property.

In other business, the supervisors:

Approved an addendum to its service agreement with the National Pike Water Authority to include a proposed water line extension on Route 381.

Accepted a $4,800 quote from Jim Oros to paint and repair cracks in the tennis courts in the township park.

Approved paying the Fayette County Juvenile Probation office $526 for the work of a litter brigade that cleaned up 37.6 lane miles of roads in the township. The juveniles cleaned sections of 15 roads.
