Under new ordinance police can site owners of abandoned vehicles

SMITHFIELD – Borough council voted unanimously to advertise an ordinance that will give the newly hired police officer authority to cite people who leave abandoned vehicles along the roadway. The ordinance, which may be adopted at the next meeting, also includes restrictions on parking within the borough.

As for other business, council spent several minutes discussing police equipment that needs to be purchased before part-time officer Brian Harvey of Ohiopyle can begin working.

Harvey was hired at last month’s meeting and is supposed to work 30 to 38 hours a week.

Mayor Chuck Cieszynski said council needs to purchase a computer, printer, fax machine, radio and filing cabinet for the police department.

Cieszynski said the police department office also needs to be painted and cleaned.

Council voted to give Cieszynski and borough secretary Jamie Hoone authority to purchase whatever police equipment is needed within reason.

In addition, council welcomed Harvey, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, to the borough.

“We look forward to working with you,” Cieszynski said.

Also during the mayor’s report, Cieszynski reported the monthly crime watch meetings have been successful, with 16 residents attending last month’s meeting.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the community center. He said the meeting will focus on personal safety.

Cieszynski encouraged all residents to attend the meeting.

“They’re very educational and I think there’s a lot to gain from them,” he said.

State police responded to seven or eight calls in the borough in July, three from the same residence and two regarding motor vehicle thefts, Cieszynski reported.

“That’s not good,” he said, adding that residents need to take a proactive approach to combating crime.

Borough council will meet next Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building.
