Edward A. Hebda

Edward A. Hebda, 91, of Bethesda, Maryland, died at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda on August 9, 2006. Mr. Hebda was born in Uniontown, Pa., on January 23, 1915, one of 10 children of the late Jan and Marya (Franczyk) Hebda. For the past year, Mr. Hebda had been living with his son in Bethesda.

He graduated from Saint Joseph Elementary School, Saint Johns High School, Class of 1934 and from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1939. At Penn State he played on the Golf Team and won the All-College Golf Title in 1937.

After serving five years active duty with the United States Army in the Pacific during World War II, Mr. Hebda remained in the Army Reserves until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel.

In the 1950’s, Mr. Hebda taught English and Civics at Takoma Park Junior High School in Takoma Park, Maryland. He continued as a guidance counselor and pupil personnel worker with the Montgomery County, Maryland Public School System for 26 years until his retirement in 1976. He received a masters of education degree from George Washington University and also pursued graduate studies at the University of Maryland.

Mr. Hebda served on the supervisory committee and board of the Montgomery County, Maryland Teachers Federal Credit Union from 1961 to 1974.

He remained an avid golfer into his 80s and in 1989, shot two under his age at Redgate Municipal Golf Course in Rockville, Maryland at the age of 75.

A long time parishioner at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, Mr. Hebda was active in the Knights of Columbus, Father Rosensteel Council.

Survivors include his son, Attorney Robert E. Hebda of Bethesda; his sister, Violet Curtner of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, Chester V. Hebda of Uniontown; and many nieces and nephews.

Janice, his wife of 60 years, died in 2003. His son, Raymond died in 1982. He was also predeceased by his brothers: Frank, Joseph, John, Julius and Henry Hebda and sisters, Rose Staso and Mary Marchute.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Robert F. Mordino in Saint John the Evangelist Historic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland on August 12, 2006. Mr. Hebda was interred in Gate of Heaven Roman Catholic Cemetery in Silver Spring.
