Accused Megan’s Law violator waives case to court

By Steve Barrett For The 2 min read

CARMICHAELS – A Carmichaels man charged in October for failing to register his new address after being listed as a sexual predator under Megan’s Law waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday. Edward Brian Sloneker, 42, was arrested by state police and arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Lee Watson on Oct. 20 on one misdemeanor count of failure to comply with registration of sexual offenders requirements.

During his preliminary hearing before Watson on Thursday, Sloneker waived the charge to Greene County Court and will stand trial at a later date. Following his hearing, he was remanded in Greene County Jail on $5,000 straight bail.

According to the complaint, Sloneker is a registered sexual predator under Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law and is required to register with state police within 10 days of any change of residence or any additional residence.

However, police said he moved from his previous residence on North 88 Road in Rices Landing to his new address on Old Waynesburg Road in Carmichaels, but he had resided at his new address for more than 10 days and had failed to notify authorities of his new residency, the complaint states.

Sloneker was convicted on Oct. 10, 2001, of aggravated indecent assault. According to records from the clerk of courts office in Greene County, Sloneker was convicted of assaulting a juvenile less than 13 years old and was sentenced to serve 30 to 60 months in state prison. Additional information regarding Sloneker’s conviction was not available because the case file had been impounded.

According to www.megans-law.net, Megan’s Law – which addresses sex offenders and child molesters – was signed by President Clinton on May 17, 1996. Megan’s Law was signed and named in remembrance of 7-year-old Megan Kanka, who was raped and murdered in a New Jersey suburb by a previously registered sex offender; the crime prompted the public demand for broad-based community notification, resulting in the signed law, according to the Web site.
