Neighbors fear house will fall

By Christine Haines 2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – Neighbors are worried that a house at near the intersection of Cass Avenue and National Pike East may collapse before borough officials complete the paperwork to get it torn down. “The renters in the house next to it just moved their dog shed to the other side of the yard. Bricks are falling down from the one corner,” said Betty Seese, who lives across the street.

Seese said debris from the house rolled across the street when the porch collapsed.

“It seems like every day more bricks are falling out of there. It’s getting scarier and scarier,” Seese said.

Borough council President Jack Lawver said the borough’s code enforcement officer has been working on the problem, but there is no quick solution.

“There are two different property owners on that house and they are trying to get both property owners in sync and get it under one name to get it torn down,” Lawver said.

Lawver said the owner of the dilapidated side has the money to tear down the building, but permission is needed from the other owner before anything can be done.

“We have someone willing to tear it down, but they want the property in exchange for doing that.

“We need to make sure there aren’t any liens against the property or anything,” Lawver said.

Lawver said he’d like to see the building safely torn down by the end of the year.

“If everything goes well, it should be,” Lawver said.

Borough code enforcement officer Edward “Woody” Nicholson could not be reached for comment.
