Nemacolin Woodlands chimney fire extinguished
A chimney fire reported at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa Saturday night was extinguished after six Fayette County fire departments responded to the scene, according to Fayette County 911. No damage or injuries were reported in the 8:17 p.m. fire that occurred in the original lodge or Hardy Lobby connected to the Chateau Lafayette located at the center of the resort. Fire crews from Farmington, Hopwood, Markleysburg, Ohiopyle, Springfield Township and Uniontown along with a unit from Addison, Somerset County, responded to the scene, according to 911. The North Union Township Volunteer Fire Department was on standby, while Fayette EMS also responded to the Wharton Township resort, according to 911.
Chief of Farmington Volunteer Fire Department Brian VanSickle said “the basic chimney fire” sparked flames 6 to 8 feet in height to shoot from the chimney and produced very light smoke in the lobby. The Uniontown Fire Department ladder truck was called in as a precaution, while a large number of departments responded due to the lodge being a commercial structure.
The lodge houses about 24 guest rooms, which Nemacolin staff evacuated for precautionary measures, added VanSickle.
All guests were returned to their rooms uninjured, said Trey Mathew, director of resort operations.
“Chief VanSickle was great and the fire departments reacted extremely quickly arriving to the fire scene,” Mathew added.
Mathew said an initial response from Nemacolin security and the culinary team extinguished the fire in the hearth, while fire crews used thermo imaging technology to view if other damage occurred. The fire was extinguished about 10 minutes after fire crews arrived on scene, said VanSickle.
