By Frances Borsodi Zajac 3 min read

As the calendar marks off the days toward the holiday, Herald-Standard readers continue to send in donations to Give-A-Christmas. The latest contributions amount to $900, sending the total amount raised to $9,808.71. “Thanks so much for your help,’ said Sparkle, the Christmas star, who is mascot for the campaign. “But remember that our deadline for collection is noon on Dec. 22 and that leaves us a little more than a week to raise nearly $30,000 to help the Salvation Army. We’re a long way from reaching our goal of $40,000.’

The latest donations came from Uniontown, Brownsville, Perryopolis, Hopwood, Fairchance, Markleysburg, Keisterville and Clarksville.

Participating groups included the Golden Age Club of Uniontown from Christ United Methodist Church, Triangle Class of Great Bethel Baptist Church in Uniontown, Steel Workers Local 13836, staff of Frazier Central Elementary School, Hopwood United Methodist Church, Little Yellow Bucket; and Laurel Highlands High School cheerleaders and football players.

“Wow! It’s wonderful when groups participate. Together they can do a lot,’ said Sparkle.

The Christmas star also received some nice notes:

“Sparkle, Thanks for this wonderful opportunity to give to others.’ Anonymous.

“Small donation to help with the Sparkle fund. Hope everyone you help will have a merry Christmas.’ Anonymous.

“Each year the staff collects money and shares it with a number of community charities. This year we have selected four charities and the Sparkle program is one of those selected.’ Staff at Central Elementary School, Frazier School District, Perryopolis.

“Sparkle, Please find enclosed our donation from the Laurel Highlands Cheerleaders and Football Players. We know it’s going to a very worthwhile cause.’ Liz Dunham, cheer sponsor/coach.

“Dear Sparkle, We hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.’ Love, Heather, Frank, Brittany and Ella Ciez from Uniontown.

“Thank you so much for all your kind words and good thoughts,’ said Sparkle. “I hope that others will consider giving a donation and soon.’

The final total will be reported in the Christmas Eve edition of the newspaper.
