Inmate’s death probed

By The 1 min read

The Greene County Coroner’s office, in conjunction with the state police, is investigating the death of an inmate found dead in his cell at the State Correctional Institution at Greene Tuesday. According to prison officials, officers found inmate Richard Jones, 52, unconscious in his cell around 7:45 a.m. Jones was taken to Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg, where he was pronounced dead at 8:02 a.m., officials said.

Coroner Gregory Rohanna said Wednesday investigations revealed Jones died of natural causes, but added that the cause of death remains pending toxicology tests.

According to prison records, Jones had been serving at SCI-Greene since January after he violated his parole. He had been convicted in 1989 of drug manufacturing and other drug charges in Allegheny County and sentenced to five to 15 years.
