MOON TOWNSHIP – Robert Morris University (RMU) professors of computer and information systems Dr. Jeanne Baugh of Uniontown and Valerie Harvey, Ph.D., of Upper St. Clair and assistant professor of computer and information systems Peter Wu, Ph.D., of Pittsburgh recently received awards for the papers they presented at the Information Systems Education Conference (ISECON), held in Dallas, Texas, in early November. Baugh, a daughter of Polly Storey of Uniontown and the late Walter J. “Buzz” Storey, was the recipient of a Distinguished Paper Award for her work titled “The Disconnect of the Non-Computer Information Systems Major to the Information Systems Literacy Course” regarding RMU’s Fundamentals of Information Systems course. The course allows students to choose an area on which to focus based on their major or outside interest and then links all of the information systems topics to students’ areas of emphasis.

In addition, all three of the RMU faculty members received a Meritorious Paper Award for their work titled “Self-Paced Learning and Online Teaching of Entity-Relationship Modeling,” on which Wu served as primary author and Baugh and Harvey as contributing authors.

Sponsored by the Foundation for Information Technology Education and managed by the special interest group on education for the Association of Information Technology Professionals, ISECON examines the latest trends and issues in the academic field of information systems (IS), including model curricula, pedagogy, program accreditation, and staying current with technological changes. ISECON attendees consisted of information systems educators from around the world, specifically professors in the IS and information technology (IT) disciplines at higher education institutions. Papers presented at the conference were refereed by peer review.

ISECON has been held annually since 1982, making it the largest continuously running conference dedicated to IS education. Next year’s conference will be held in early November at Pittsburgh’s Sheraton Station Square Hotel, with Harvey serving as general chairman of the conference’s leadership team.
