Uniontown man dies in accident
A 55-year-old Uniontown man was killed early Monday morning when the pickup truck he was driving crashed on Route 119 in South Union Township. State police said George T. Matthews of Morgantown Road was traveling north on Route 119 when the Dodge Ram pickup he was driving cut across both lanes and into the center median around 12:50 a.m. at the intersection with Walnut Hill Road.
Police said it appeared that Matthews had drifted onto the side of the road and “overcorrected” losing control of the vehicle.
After the truck hit the median, police said the vehicle became airborne, crossing the southbound lanes and landing on a guardrail before rolling over.
Matthews, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck, police said.
According to Fayette County Deputy Coroner Jessie Langer, Matthews was pronounced dead at the Uniontown Hospital at 1:27 a.m.
An examination by Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip Reilly revealed the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head and face, Langer said.
No autopsy is planned and the cause of death remains pending toxicology reports, Langer added.
Emergency crews had to close down traffic in the southbound lanes of Route 119 as crews worked to clear the accident.
According to state police, American EMS and the South Union Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the crash.
