‘Holiday Escape’ set A cooperative of Greene County organizations is hosting a free family gathering called “Holiday Escape” for Greene County families, sponsored by the Family Stability task group.

“Holiday Escape” is intended to increase parent and child interactions and is a collaborative effort with support from the Greene County Commissioners and community agencies including Greene County Human Services, Community Action Southwest, Neighborhood Drug Awareness Corps, Intermediate Unit 1, Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services, Value Behavioral Health, and other community agencies.

The 2006 Holiday Escape will be held on Dec. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Greene County Fairgrounds 4-H Building. An adult must accompany all children.

It is recommended that those attending bring comfortable seating.

The movie “The Chronicles of Narnia” will be shown at 10:30 a.m. A free lunch will also be provided and various educational activities, games and agency information will be available along with free door prizes and gifts.

The program was initiated by a steering committee comprised of six community organizations. The purpose of the collaborative is to create an integrated, coordinated community and family based service system to meet the health, education and community needs of Greene County residents.

Budget adopted

Wharton Township supervisors adopted a 2007 budget that does not increase real estate taxes.

The $1.65 million spending plan includes an $888,604 general fund and holds property taxes are the current rate of .347 mills.

At that rate, property owners will pay $3.47 on every $10,000 of the assessed value of their properties.

Taxes on a property with an assessed value of $50,000 will pay the township $17.35 a year.

In other business Monday, the supervisors approved an ordinance that sets three different speed limits on different parts of Workman Road. The speed limits of 25, 30 and 35 miles an hour will be posted in the next few weeks.

Taxes hold steady

Franklin Township supervisors adopted a $1.28 million 2007 budget that does not raise real estate taxes.

The budget holds township property taxes at the current rate of 1.28 mills.

At that rate, property owners pay $12.80 on every $10,000 of the assessed value of their properties.

Taxes on a property with an assessed value of $50,000 are $64.

In other business Monday, the supervisors accepted a bid from Veolia Environmental Services of Uniontown for residential garbage collection.

Reed Kiger, chairman of the board of supervisors, said Veolia will be awarded a five-year contract with rate increases in each year.

The rates are $10.99 a month in 2007, $11.31 a month in 2008, $11.64 in 2009, $11.98 in 2010 and $12.33 in 2011, Kiger said.

The current rate is $7.92 a month.

The contract does not include commercial or business collection.
