4-H members receive scholarships

By The 3 min read

The Fayette County 4-H Youth Program has announced the selection of five Fayette County 4-H members as recipients of the first Fayette County 4-H Scholarship. Money for the scholarship was raised from the Fayette County 4-H Benefit Auction held during the Fayette County Fair. The total amount raised was $3,100, with $2,000 of it funding the scholarships and the remaining amount allotted to helping 4-H members attend national, state and regional functions.

Vickie Ansell Baker, auction chairwoman, along with many other Fayette County 4-H Advisory Committee members, 4-H leaders and members and other volunteers spent many hours planning and organizing the first-of-its-kind auction for all 4-H members in the county.

The purpose was to raise money to support educational scholarships and programming for Fayette County 4-H members.

Jackson Auction Services donated its time, and numerous local businesses, residents and 4-H clubs made donations.

Scholarship recipients are current or former members of Fayette County 4-H. Each student received $400 to go toward his or her college education. A subcommittee of 4-H leaders selected recipients based on their total 4-H experience.

The recipients are as follows:

n Larry Ansell of Scottdale, son of Larry and Susan Ansell and member of the 4-H dairy, market goat and rifle clubs. He is majoring in secondary citizenship education with a history focus at Penn State University.

n Shauna Couch of Hopwood, daughter of Emmett Couch II and member of the shotgun, rifle, Dawson horse, market goat and Teen County Council 4-H clubs. She is majoring in secondary education at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

n Rebecca Giles of Belle Vernon, daughter of Marianne Turcheck and Paul Giles, who is majoring in technology education at California University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the market lamb, sheep breeding and Menallen Stitchers 4-H clubs.

n Kalie Minick of Scottdale, daughter of Bruce and Barb Minick, who is attending Washington & Jefferson College, and majoring in business and psychology. She is a member of the New Horizons Community, market lamb, market goat, sheep breeding and rifle 4-H clubs.

n Maria Sholtis of Uniontown, daughter of Andrew and Donna Sholtis, who is a member of the sheep breeding, market lamb, market swine, dairy goat and market goat 4-H clubs and is attending the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in psychology and English writing.
