Local colleges to observe King day

Four local colleges will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with guest speakers and programs geared to the visions of the legendary man on Monday and Tuesday. California University of Pennsylvania will kick off its third annual Day of Service programs at 10 a.m. Monday in the Vulcan Theatre, located on the first floor of the Elmo Natali Student Center, with guest speaker Freda Clemmons, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Westland, PA. Cal U students will also volunteer within the community at places such as Center In The Woods, California United Presbyterian Church and the Jenny Carter House.

Waynesburg College will also welcome a guest speaker – Louis Waller, chairman of Waller Corp. – Monday at 11 a.m. in Alumni Hall, located on the third floor of Miller Hall. Waller’s lecture titled “Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Lasting Legacy,” will “focus on the shortness of Dr. King’s life and the lasting character of his legacy,” according to press release.

West Virginia University will hold its annual Unity Breakfast on Monday at 8 a.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms with keynote speaker Dean Mary Ellen Mazey of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and a WVU alumna. The university will also announce the recipient of the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Achievement Award and the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship winner. Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus will hold its annual MLK Celebration on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 11:30 a.m. in the Maggie Hardy Magerko Auditorium with speaker Tim Stevens, former president of the Pittsburgh NAACP and founder of the Black Political Empowerment program.

The school will also honor more than 70 area school students. They were nominated by their schools for excelling in the areas of athletics, academics, community service and the performing arts.
