Police watching roadways

1 min read

State police will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. and the Smooth Operator initiative during the Fourth of July holiday driving period, according to Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller. “Our goal will be to identify and arrest aggressive drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said in a prepared statement.

Operation C.A.R.E. is a national program aimed at reducing crashes on interstate highways during holiday driving periods. As part of the operation, an acronym for Combined Accident Reduction Effort, troopers will be engaged in highly visible, aggressive highway enforcement activity.

Smooth Operator is a public safety initiative aimed at reducing aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, tailgating and failing to yield right of way.

Police will use radar, reconnaissance aircraft, motorcycles and other unconventional enforcement tools as part of the initiative.

The holiday driving period runs through Tuesday.
