State Rep. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg, wants to let Merchant Marines of the 48th Legislative District who served in World War II know that they might be eligible for a cash bonus from the state. Act 22 of 2006, which establishes the Pennsylvania Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus program, was signed into law by Gov. Ed Rendell on May 11.

“This Act makes $500 bonuses available to Merchant Marines who served in World War II.

“It’s just another way the state says ‘thank you’ to these brave men and women for their service to our country,” Solobay said.

To be eligible for the Pennsylvania Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus, an applicant must:

– Be a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran who served on active duty, including training, in the U.S. Merchant Marine between Dec. 7, 1941, and Aug. 15, 1945;

– Have been honorably discharged from the service; and

– Be a legal resident of Pennsylvania as of April 12, 2006;

Applications for the bonus must be submitted to the County Veteran Affairs Office in the veteran’s county of residence by Dec. 31.

For more information, or to receive an application, veterans should contact Solobay’s constituent service office in Canonsburg at 724-746-3762 or in Washington at 724-223-2114.

Veterans may also contact the Bureau for Veterans’ Affairs at 1-800-547-2838 or by logging on to its Web site at www.dmva.state.pa.us for more information.
