Joseph G. Oswald
Joseph G. Oswald, age 92, of California, Pa., died Sunday, July 2, 2006. He was born November 28, 1913, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of Stephen Oswald and Anna (Pastuka) Oswald.
Mr. Oswald retired from the coalmines and then went to work at California University of Pennsylvania where he worked for the Maintenance Department in Steele Auditorium.
He was a member of the John F. Kennedy American Legion Post 377 in California, Pa., Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church and The Holy Name Society.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a Staff Sergeant with the Medical Detachment in the 27th Armored Battalion, Combat Command B of the 9th Armored Division. He was captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge, near Malmedy (Belgium). He received the Bronze Star and also the French Freedom Medal for his “meritorious achievement in ground combat” while fighting in World War II.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John Oswald and Stephen Oswald, and three sisters, Mary Oswald Metkus, Ann Oswald Shimborski and Helen Oswald.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Sophie Glemza Oswald; daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Ron Malmgren of Washington, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Karen Oswald of Red Lion, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Dennis Faieta of California, Pa.; and one brother, Frank Oswald of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Joel Oswald, Paul Oswald, Julie Sulkowski, Allison Herron and Kristine Malmgren; and two great-granddaughters: Corinne Oswald and Kaitlyn Oswald.
Friends will be received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California, Pa., on Tuesday, July 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 5, until 1:30 p.m. when a Blessing Service will be held in the Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 2 p.m. in Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Fourth Street, with the Rev. Father Edward S. Litevac as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
