Firemen to host poker bike ride during annual convention
CONNELLSVILLE – A fun bike ride or walk along the Yough River Trail is one of several activities being planned as New Haven Hose Volunteer Fire Co. hosts the 68th Fayette County Firemen’s Convention July 16-22. “It is going to be a lot of fun,” said Kenny Jaynes, who along with Dr. Paul Means is overseeing the July 22 poker bike ride and walk. “This is not a race and everyone has an opportunity to win.”
The bike ride and walk will begin at the New Haven Hose fire station along 7th Street to the trail. The ride will be a 15K trip while the walk will be along a 5K course.
Along the trail, each participant will receive five playing cards with the two participants holding the best poker hand at the end of the event receiving a trophy.
Afterwards, all participants will be eligible to win a variety of prizes donated by area businesses and organizations, including two mountain bicycles, Pirates baseball tickets, and restaurant gift certificates.
A discounted $12 registration fee is available until July 15. After July 15, the cost will be $15 per person. T-shirts are guaranteed only to those that pre-register and are available in adult small, medium, large, extra-large and extra, extra large.
Registration on the day of the event will begin at 9 a.m. with the ride and walk to start at 10 a.m.
Applications are available at area businesses, the New Haven fire station and from members.
Also that day, Highlands Hospital will be sponsoring a multiphasic blood analysis program at New Haven from 6 to 9 a.m.
The program will include a minimum of 30 tests that screen for health problems such as anemia, kidney and heart disease, diabetes, leukemia and liver disease.
In order to assure accurate test results, each participant is asked to refrain from eating or drinking 12 hours prior to the test. Small amounts of water during the fast are permissible.
The cost for the program is $25 and is payable by cash or check. No insurance claims will be processed for the screening program. Optional tests, including the prostate specific antigen (PSA) and thyroid (THS) can be performed at an additional cost of $20 for each test and a hemoglobin (A1C) test can be done for an additional $15.
Appointments are required and can be made by calling 724-626-2430, Monday through Friday.
