Carmichaels council rejects borough building bids
CARMIAHCEALS – Borough council rejected all the construction bids submitted for a new borough building because they did not meet the borough’s specifications. Council unanimously voted Tuesday to reject all four bids ranging from $58,100 to $110,549 that were opened at last month’s meeting.
Chris Bates, council president, said solicitor Kirk King recommended rejecting them all after he and the borough engineer reviewed the bids.
“Specifications not being met” as well as some questions about the prices were the reasons the bids were rejected, Bates said.
He said he will meet with the King in the next few weeks to decide what to do next.
“We’ve waited this long. We’d rather take our time, as frustrating as it might be,” Bates said.
The borough has been renting the existing tiny borough building on South Market Street for about 20 years.
Council advertised for bids to construct a one-story 1,200-square-foot modular building on a lot the borough owns on the town square.
The apparent low bid of $58,100 came from Williams Scotsman of Moon Township, but it was an alternate bid for a 60-by-24-foot building. The main bid was $75,000.
Valley Modular of Maryland submitted a bid of $64,979 and Route 21 Homes of Cumberland Township bid $93,236.
A McKees Rocks company bid $94,794 for a building without options and $110,549 for a building with options.
All those bids were rejected.
