Group in compliance The Smithfield Volunteer Firefighters’ Relief Association (VFRA) was found to be in compliance with tested laws and regulations for the 2002-2004 time period, according to state Auditor General’s office.

The VFRA is a nonprofit organization that provides financial protection to volunteer firefighters who are injured or killed as a result of their participation in the fire service.

The Auditor General’s ofice is responsible for auditing VFRA funds to make sure the money is spent according to state law. The department also conducts workshops to help local firefighters comply with VFRA regulations.

VFRA money is derived from a 2 percent state tax on fire insurance purchased by Pennsylvania residents from insurance companies incorporated outside of the state. The money is used to pay for insurance to protect volunteer firefighters, purchase fire equipment and cover volunteer training expenses.

VFRAs are distinct separate entities from fire companies.

“The proper management of funds in Smithfield VFRA ensures that it will continue to support local volunteer firefighters who bravely put themselves at risk to help protect their neighbors’ health and property,” Auditor General Jack Wagner stated in a press release.
