Luzerne officials buy equipment

LUZERNE TWP. – Within four minutes, the board of supervisors passed five motions during their regular meeting Tuesday afternoon. Supervisors agreed to purchase a 2006 JCB Backhoe for $61,010.50 and a 2006 dump truck for $66,973.74 at a combined cost of $127,984.24 from Walsh Equipment under the state piggyback purchase agreement. They also voted to borrow $103,991.79 from M&T Bank for five years with one payment a year of $23,992.45 starting July 30, 2007, and continuing until July 30, 2011, to pay for the equipment. Supervisors voted to sell the township backhoe for $9,000, too.

The board also conducted the following business:

– Announced that sewerage being installed for Phase II in Penncraft, Merrittstown, Tower Hill II, Thompson II, Keeney Row, Weinbrenner Avenue and Allison II could cause road closings and delays. A public meeting to discuss sewerage plans is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. in Allison II fire hall.

– Voted to consider increasing the fines for the following ordinances: abandoned vehicles, dangerous buildings and grass and weeds. The fines would increase from $25 up to a possible $300.

– Agreed to consider applying to the Fayette County commissioners for a $5,000 Liquid Fuels grant to pave Telegraph Road Extension.

The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8.
