Authority director resigns

By Christine Haines 2 min read

REDSTONE TWP. – The Redstone Township Sewer Authority Wednesday accepted the resignation of chairman Dwayne Thomas, effective Aug. 31. Thomas will be moving to the Lancaster area at that time. He has served on the authority for the past 14 years, seeing the construction of the township’s first sewage treatment plant during that time.

“There is still much more to be done. I am very sad that I won’t be there to help get the rest of the work finished,” Thomas wrote in his letter.

Current plans for the authority include plant expansion to service a portion of Luzerne Township and the possible construction of a new office building at the treatment plant site.

The plant expansion was discussed Wednesday during the presentation of the 2005 audit. Engineer Don Reho asked the auditor, Jeff McCue, if the expansion would increase the fixed assets of the authority even though Luzerne Township is incurring the debt for the project. McCue said he would review the agreement with Luzerne Township as it will affect the authority’s accounting practices.

McCue said there were no problems with the 2005 audit, though accounts receivable had gone up since 2004. The accounts receivable represent uncollected delinquent accounts.

Thomas reported that a letter has been sent to state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, seeking a grant to help offset the cost of constructing a new office building. The authority rents office space. Thomas said a new building would cost an estimated $190,000. Reho said a better estimate would be available once the authority authorizes the engineering firm to draw up plans for the building.

In other matters, Thomas cautioned customers paying their bills through a third party that they are still responsible for all late fees if the authority does not get the money by the due date, regardless of when they paid the third party.

Thomas said customers who chose to use a third party payment system should check to make sure their bills will actually be paid by the due date.
