ABATE helps police department

Putting some miles on their bikes for a good cause, members of the Fayette County ABATE chapter took to the streets once again to raise money for the Uniontown Police Department. The second annual poker run, held June 10, raised more than $1,500 for the police department’s Emergency Services Unit, according to Fayette County ABATE treasurer Donna Adams.

The Emergency Services Unit (ESU) is composed of officers who have undergone specialized training to respond to emergency and rescue operations that arise.

Police Chief Kyle W. Sneddon said the training ESU members undergo is “costly and intensive,” adding that officers are trained how to use a wide array of tactical equipment, which is also expensive to purchase.

Sneddon said the ESU receives “very little funding” from the city and that the specialized unit depends on donations from civic groups such as ABATE to pay for training and equipment.

“The people who belong to Fayette County ABATE have been great supporters of our department,” Sneddon said. “We really appreciate them and all they do.”

Adams said Fayette County ABATE is a community-oriented chapter that tries to hold poker run fund-raisers for various organizations at least once a month.

“We like to give back to the community as much as possible,” Adams said.

Last year, Fayette County ABATE raised about $500 for the police department’s K-9 unit.

“We raised triple that amount for the police department this year during the poker run,” Adams said.

“Every year we try to make it bigger and raise more money,” said Adams.

Adams said that about 45 motorcyclists participated in the poker run this year, including three Uniontown police officers – Lt. Michael Metros, Patrolman Chuck David and Patrolman John Kauer.

ABATE, which stands for Alliance of Bikers Aimed Towards Education, is a national organization with members in all 50 states.
